Junie B. Jones: Breaking the Norms

(ENG 262 final project by Hannah M.)

Barbara Parks, author of the famous Junie B. Jones series, made her mark in the children’s literary world with her creativity and wit. Her love for writing and simply making people laugh is something that Barbara always aimed to achieve through her writing, and Junie B. Jones has done just that. Junie B. represents a young girl who actively goes against stereotypical notions, paving her own mischievous ways and being herself through and through. Barbara crafts these books in a way that is accessible to young readers but brings about a good laugh for adults too. Junie B. Jones is able to take readers along a journey that can be anything from monsters under the bed to losing teeth. Barbara aimed to make her stories relatable, as a lot of what Junie B. goes through (i.e. school, holiday celebrations, learning how to deal with feelings) is what young children also experience.
